Atlantic County Democratic Chairman Michael Suleiman released the following statement on the deaths of Atlantic County Executive candidate Margaret “Peggy” Capone and Lieutenant Gov. Sheila Oliver:
“I join the entire Atlantic County Democratic Committee in expressing my sadness over the passing of Margaret “Peggy” Capone after an extended illness. In addition to being a passionate and committed Democratic volunteer and activist, Peggy served honorably for years as a member of the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District Board of Education. In particular, Peggy should be commended for stepping up earlier this year and running for Atlantic County Executive, not being afraid of the consequences of running like so many other challengers have been in the past. It’s indicative of how tough Peggy was.
As much as she loved politics and public service, her greatest passion was her family. She was so incredibly proud of her children, and our deepest sympathies go out to them and her husband, Christopher.
When the county committee convenes on August 9 to select new candidates for Legislative District 2, I will direct the committee to also select a new County Executive candidate.
If that weren’t enough, Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver also passed away today. Sheila was instrumental to the successes in Atlantic City, and her loss will reverberate throughout our region. On a personal level, Sheila was a friend and supporter to me. She was always generous with her time and was always willing to help me whenever I asked. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.”
