Justin Barbera, one of the five Republican candidates in tomorrow’s gubernatorial primary, was arrested last week for failing to pay child support and spent more than twelve hours at the Salem County Correctional Facility. He was released on a court order.
Officials at the county jail confirmed that Barbera was booked at around 2:25 AM on June 3 and released at about 3:10 PM that day.
A contractor from Burlington County, Barbera was able to secure the 2,500 signatures to get on the June 10 statewide primary ballot. He has not raised any money or secured any significant endorsements, and did not qualify for the two Republican gubernatorial debates.
Barbera attended the New Jersey Globe/On New Jersey/Rider University/Save Jersey debate in Newark on May 20, but was escorted out of the building after demanding to be included in post-debate press gaggles; one person said he threatened to storm the stage.
In the past, Barbera has faced charges of theft and criminal mischief.
He ran as a conservative third-party candidate in the 3rd congressional district last November in the race to succeed now-Senator Andy Kim. He finished with 0.3% of the vote. Now-Rep. Herb Conaway Jr. beat his Republican opponent by about nine percentage points.
Barbera has not returned multiple telephone calls or responded to text messages.
