New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has named Jerrel Harvey, a former New Jersey political operative and staffer who ran the communications shop for Gov. Phil Murphy’s 2021 re-election campaign, as her new strategic communications advisor.

He’ll head up day-to-day messaging and work on her long-term initiatives in the Executive Chamber – including a defense of New York’s congestion pricing.

“Jerrel knows how to creatively and effectively communicate Governor Hochul’s vision,” said Hochul spokesman Anthony Hogrebe.  “I’m excited to have him help us develop and drive innovative strategies to reach even more New Yorkers.”

Hogrebe also started out in New Jersey, first as an intern and then as a staffer to Gov. James E. McGreevey.

Harvey was the communications director for Hochul’s 2022 re-election campaign and later worked at Global Strategy Group.

After serving as a legislative fellow in the office of Assemblyman Herb Conaway, Jr. (D-Delran), as deputy campaign manager for the 7th district Democrats in 2017, as deputy chief of staff to Assemblywoman Carol Murphy (D-Mount Laurel), and as communications director to Assemblymen Vince Mazzeo (D-Northfield) and John Armato (D-Buena).
