A group of over 100 former federal prosecutors, including six former U.S. Attorneys and three former state attorneys general, are urging the confirmation of Jennifer Davenport as the 57th Attorney General of New Jersey.
Davenport, who was nominated by Gov. Mikie Sherrill, is set to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee this morning. She has been serving as Acting Attorney General since January 20.
Among those advocating for Davenport are former U.S. Attorneys Craig Carpenito, Robert Cleary, Paul Fishman, and Philip Sellinger; former Acting U.S. Attorneys Vikas Khanna and Ralph Marra; former Attorneys General Jeff Chiesa and Gurbir Grewal; and former Acting Attorney General Andrew Bruck.
Davenport served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney from 2008 to 2015, when she joined the Drug Enforcement Administration.
“Having worked alongside Ms. Davenport in one of the most demanding prosecutorial environments in the country, we can attest to her exceptional judgment, integrity, and commitment to the rule of law,” the ex-prosecutors said. “She combines deep legal acumen with a temperament ideally suited to the responsibilities of the office she has been nominated to lead.”
They said that as a federal prosecutor, Davenport handled “complex and sensitive matters with rigor and fairness, earning the respect of colleagues, defense counsel, and judges alike.”
“She demonstrated an ability to master intricate factual records, make sound decisions, and exercise prosecutorial authority with restraint and independence,” they said. “Just as important, she was known within the U.S. Attorney’s Office as a generous mentor and a steady presence in moments of pressure—someone whose counsel others sought out when the stakes were highest.”
