Two members of the Teaneck Township Council have endorsed Newark Mayor Ras Baraka for the Democratic nomination for governor, further splitting the Bergen County municipality with about 17,250 votes.

Danielle Gee and Denise Belcher are with Baraka, while Mayor Michael Pagan supports Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, and Councilman Elie Katz is backing Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly).

“Mayor Ras Baraka has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to building stronger, more equitable communities,” Gee said. “His leadership in Newark has delivered real results – whether it’s addressing housing challenges, improving public safety, or fostering economic growth. I am confident he will bring the same energy and effectiveness to the governor’s office.”

Belcher praised Baraka’s “dedication to social justice, environmental sustainability, and investing in youth aligns with the values we hold dear in Teaneck.”

“His vision for a more inclusive and prosperous New Jersey is one that I fully support, and I am proud to stand with him in this race,” she said.

The endorsements are consistent with Baraka’s statewide strategy of winning in a large field of Democratic candidates by assembling a coalition of faith leaders and Black elected officials.  Last week, Baraka was endorsed by Camden Mayor Vic Carstarphen.

Teaneck is part of Gottheimer’s congressional district.   Three other councilmembers — Hillary Goldberg, Karne Orgen and Mark Schwartz — have not yet taken sides in the governor’s race.
