Former Atlantic County Freeholder Ashley Bennett backed Atlantic County Our Revolution founder Mico Lucide for the county’s clerkship Thursday.

“Mico’s candidacy will energize people and usher in the next generation of leadership Atlantic County needs,” said Bennett, “He is an excellent candidate that will set the standard for what people should expect from their county clerk.”

Bennett’s endorsement joined those of NJ Working Families State Director Sue Altman, Bernie Sanders New Jersey 2020 campaign vice chair Barry Brendel and Carlo Favretto, a delegate for the progressive Democrats of New Jersey.

The backing comes as organization Democrats in the county align behind Egg Harbor City Mayor Lisa Jiampetti. They’re running to replace Democratic clerk Ed McGettigan, who is not seeking re-election.

Though Jiampetti has the support of the county’s top elected Democrats, she isn’t guaranteed to win the party line there.

Last year, political science professor Brigid Harrison had organizational support for the line in Atlantic County, but she was defeated by Amy Kennedy at county Democrats’ convention. Bennett, who also sought the to run in the second congressional district, dropped out at the convention.

“What you will get if you elect Mico Lucide is simple,” said Brendel. “He is a fighter for everyday people, someone who will work to make the office better and more responsive to people’s needs, someone who will put your needs first and last. The result will be better services and a more efficient and cost-effective county government.”
