A joint meeting of Democratic county committee members from New Jersey’s 10th district will be held on July 18 to pick a candidate for a two-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark) died in office on April 24 after the filing deadline and won the June 4 Democratic primary posthumously.
All three counties in the district – Essex, Union and Hudson – will meet at the Essex County Donald M. Payne, Sr. Tech School in Newark.
The filing deadline to file a letter of intent to be on the ballot for the special convention vote is 2 PM Monday. Letters of intent must also include a nomination and a second from an elected member of the county committee from the 10th district. Voting machines will be used and candidates will be listed alphabetically. To win, a candidate must get fifty percent plus one, something that could trigger a runoff.
The vote comes two days after a special Democratic primary to fill Payne’s unexpired term.
The county committee is not obligated to pick the winner of the special primary, but they likely will. The preferred party choice, Newark Council President LaMonica McIver, appears well-positioned to win the July 16 special primary election.
The winner of the county committee vote will face Republican Carmen Bucco in November.
