Adding some gravitas to the leadership of Rutgers University, Gov. Phil Murphy has nominated one of the state’s most influential political insiders, Gary Taffet, to serve on the Board of Governors.
He was picked to replace Kevin Egan, who resigned to take his seat in the New Jersey State Assembly.
The move potentially positions Taffet to play a strong role in the selection of a new Rutgers president whenever Jonathan Holloway decides to move on.
“I commend Governor Murphy’s appointment of Gary Taffet to the Rutgers Board of Governors. I’ve known Gary for decades and cannot think of anyone more qualified or more dedicated to the mission of the university,” said Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin. “His depth of knowledge, including his experience in state government and his success in business, will be an invaluable asset to the Rutgers community. He is a passionate, distinguished alumnus who will honor the history of our State University and help build an even brighter, scarlet future.”
A former chief of staff to Gov. James E. McGreevey, Taffet served on the New Jersey Legislative Apportionment Commission and has been a trustee of Middlesex County College. The Rutgers alum is a managing member of Acrisure New Jersey.
