John Weingart retires from Eagleton

John Weingart has retired after 23 years as the highly regarded associate director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University.

Prior to joining Eagleton in 2000, Weingart served as an assistant commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and as district director for freshman Rep. Rush Holt (D-Hopewell).   He was the executive director of the New Jersey Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility Siting Board and ran the DEP’s Division of Coastal Resources.

He was a senior fellow at the Center for the Analysis of Public Issues, the think tank run by New Jersey journalism legend John Kolesar.

Weingart ran the Center on the American Governor, the Eagleton Fellowship, and the Arthur J. Holland Ethics in Government Program.

“I got to know John during my time at Eagleton, where I got to see him first-hand impart his passion for politics, his love for public service, and his deep knowledge of New Jersey government upon generations of students,” said Rep. Robert J.  Menendez (D-Jersey City). “His retirement caps a long career of service not only to Rutgers and Eagleton, but also to four gubernatorial administrations and the millions of people who call our state home.  We are all the better for his many contributions to New Jersey, and I wish him well in retirement.”

Eagleton has not yet named a replacement for Weingart, whose retirement was effective June 30.
