Saying that he wants to spare Republicans a divisive U.S. Senate primary so the party may focus on winning the general election, former News 12 New Jersey reporter Alex Zdan today dropped out of the Senate race.
“Yesterday, marked the end of the embarrassing saga of the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate to replace the disgraced ‘Gold Bar’ Bob Menendez, and it is time for party unity on the Republican side,” said Zdan., referencing Tammy Murphy’s withdrawal that made Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) the overwhelming frontrunner. I believe it is best to avoid a long, contentious, and expensive primary, denying our eventual Senate nominee ten valuable weeks to party build, organize support throughout the state, and explain to the voters why it is time to send a Republican to the U.S. Senate for the first time in decades.”
The first-time candidate said he was “ incredibly proud to have received so much support from people looking for a new voice in Washington and to have received the endorsements of Monmouth and Passaic counties.”
His decision now leaves hotelier Curtis Bashaw and Mendham Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner battling for the chance to take on Kim in the general election in a state that hasn’t elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate in 52 years.
Zdan pledged to remain involved in New Jersey politics, saying, “Washington and New Jersey are broken.
“This campaign focused on the issues that impact every American, border security, fighting corruption, standing strong against the Chinese Communist Party, and protecting parental rights,” stated Zdan. “We need leaders willing to stand up for authentic conservative principles, helping our party win races, and proving that New Jersey is not a permanently blue state.”
This morning, Passaic County Republicans gave their line to Bashaw, who has received organization endorsements in Atlantic, Ocean, Cumberland, Somerset, Camden, Mercer, Gloucester, Middlesex, Cape May, Burlington, Salem, and Essex.
Serrano Glassner has party support in Hunterdon, Union, Morris, Warren, Bergen, and Sussex.
