Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing), who doesn’t always take sides in Democratic primaries, has endorsed Rep. Robert J. Menendez (D-Jersey City) for re-election to a second term in Congress.

“Rob works tirelessly for the residents of New Jersey’s 8th district, and I am proud to endorse him for re-election to Congress,” Watson Coleman said “Since taking office, Rob’s dedication to his community and our shared values has shined bright.  And as our state’s only Hispanic congressman, it is crucial we re-elect Rob so that his constituents can continue to benefit from his dedication, perspective, and service.”

Watson Coleman, a former New Jersey Democratic state chair, was a small group of New Jersey Democrats to stop short of calling for the resignation of Menendez’s father, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, following his indictment on federal corruption charges last September.

The indictment has put the freshman congressman with the same name into a primary battle with Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla.

Watson Coleman praised Menendez’s record since joining the House last year.

“We have worked closely together in calling for the closure of the Elizabeth Detention Center and standing strong against MAGA extremism. Rob is a progressive champion for our most vulnerable communities,” she said.  “He fights to uplift families, improve affordability, and strengthen reproductive rights.”

Watson Coleman is one of four New Jersey House members to come from prominent political families: her late father, John Watson, served as an assemblyman and Mercer County freeholder.  A fifth member of the delegation, Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff), is the cousin of North Caldwell Councilman Steve Weinstein.

“New Jersey is fortunate to have trail-blazing leaders like Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, and I am lucky to call her a friend and colleague,” Menendez stated.   “I am always inspired by Bonnie’s work ethic and commitment to addressing our toughest issues. She is an incredible advocate for our state, and I look forward to our continued collaboration.”
