Testa passes on U.S. Senate bid against Booker

South Jersey senator says he wants to ‘serve the people of the 1st legislative district’

Senate Minority Whip Michael Testa (R-Vineland) has ruled out a run for U.S. Senate against Democrat Cory Booker this year, leaving the Republican field wide open.

“I am no longer considering it,” Testa told the New Jersey Globe.  “I want to serve the people of the first legislative district.”

Former News 12 reporter Alex Zdan is expected to file with the Federal Election Commission today or tomorrow and formally join the race next week.  Former Tabernacle Deputy Mayor Justin Michael Murphy is already an announced candidate.

Dr. Robert Lebovics, an Englewood physician, says he’s likely to take on Booker.  Comedian Vinnie Brand has also said he’s interested.

Testa is preparing to seek re-election in 2027, and is considered a possible candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomination against Democrat Mikie Sherrill in 2029.

Republicans have not won a U.S. Senate race in New Jersey since 1972; only Hawaii has gone longer.
