First Lady Tammy Murphy is moving toward her announcement next week as a candidate for a United States Senate seat, registering her campaign website and social media accounts.

TammyMurphyNJ.com was registered on November 2.  She has already received approval from Facebook for a “political candidate” page, which will allow her to begin running fundraising ads on the social media platform immediately.    She already uses a personal Twitter/X account that is separate from the one managed by the governor’s office.

Murphy will seek the Democratic nomination for the seat currently held by indicted incumbent Bob Menendez.  Menendez has not made a final decision about running for re-election while facing charges of bribery, conspiracy, and illegally acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government.

Her husband, Gov. Phil Murphy, said last month that he would not appoint his wife to the Senate if Menendez resigns.  Menendez has vowed to remain in office.

If she wins, Murphy would become the first sitting First Lady of any state to win election to the U.S. Senate and the second to win statewide office.

She will face Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown),  former Newark school board member Lawrence Hamm, and newcomer Kyle Jasey in the June 2024 Democratic primary.

A three-term congressman and former Obama White House staffer, Kim entered the race on September 23, one day after Menendez was indicted.   He raised $1 million in his first week as a candidate.

Kim will kick off his campaign tomorrow evening at eh Double Nickel Brewing Co. in Pennsauken.
