First Lady Tammy Murphy today picked up the endorsement of Passaic County Democratic Chairman John Currie, who becomes the sixth county Democratic leader to support her bid for the U.S. Senate.

“This Senate election is crucial for Democrats.  We need someone in Washington who will strongly oppose the Republican Party’s extreme views and represent New Jersey’s best interests,” Currie said.  “Tammy Murphy is that person.”

This week, Murphy became the third Democrat to enter the Senate race, along with Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) and former Newark school board member Lawrence Hamm.  It’s still not clear if the Democratic incumbent, Bob Menendez, is seeking re-election.  Menendez is under indictment on charges of bribery, conspiracy, and illegally representing a foreign government.

Currie cited Murphy’s commitment to “defending women’s rights, combating gun violence, reducing living costs, and working with other New Jersey representatives to reform the SALT tax rule.”

“She is the perfect candidate for these times, and I’m excited to endorse her for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senator,” he said.

Passaic County has 130,614 registered Democrats, which ranks 9th in the state.

Murphy has already secured county chair endorsements in Bergen, Middlesex, Camden, Hudson, and Somerset counties.  Together, the six county organizations make up over 1.1 million registered Democrats – 44.7% of all Democrats in the state.

Currie called Murphy a “steadfast ally to Passaic County” and said her support was crucial to the state party when Currie served as chairman during the first three years of Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration.

“She helped us face big challenges and achieve substantial results,” he said.
