The national environmentalist group Sierra Club announced today that it is supporting Democrat Sue Altman’s campaign for the 7th congressional district, which is set to host a highly competitive race this year.
“We are excited to endorse Sue Altman in a critical race that will help determine our nation’s response to the existential climate crisis we face,” Allen Swanson, the Sierra Club New Jersey Chapter’s Loantaka Group chair, said in a statement. “Sue is a champion for a clean energy future and will fight for strong environmental protections, preserve open spaces across New Jersey, and ensure New Jerseyans have access to clean water and air.”
The 7th district, which stretches from the New York City suburbs of Union County in the east to the sprawling rural environment of Sussex and Warren Counties in the west, contains many of New Jersey’s most famously picturesque natural environments – environments which Altman said she would fight to protect from overdevelopment, climate change, and warehouse sprawl.
Altman, who is unopposed in next month’s Democratic primary, will face Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield) in November’s general election; Kean got to office in 2022 by unseating Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) in a close and expensive race.
