First Lady Tammy Murphy’s campaign for U.S. Senate received an endorsement from the New Jersey Council of Sheet Metal Workers today, putting another construction union in the first lady’s corner ahead of a competitive Democratic primary.
“Tammy is a bold advocate for New Jersey’s union brothers and sisters and her commitment to our values is unmatched,” Joe Demark, the union’s president, said in a statement. “Tammy is the only candidate we can trust to get things done on behalf of our members. We know that she will be a strong leader in the Senate who will work every day to ensure that our union families have fair wages, great benefits, and safe work environments.”
Murphy was previously endorsed by the union’s Local 25, covering North Jersey only; today’s endorsement comes from the overarching state council, which represents five local unions and more than 10,000 total workers.
The Sheet Metal Workers are the latest building trades union to support Murphy against Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) for incumbent Senator Bob Menendez’s seat. Also on Team Murphy are the Eastern Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters, the New Jersey State Electrical Workers Association Construction Division, the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Ironworkers, and several others.
