Rob Menendez taking on regional leadership role in DCCC

Two-term congressman will be vice chair for northeast

Rep. Rob Menendez (D-Jersey City) will serve as one of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC)’s regional vice chairs for the 2026 cycle, giving the sophomore congressman a role in Democratic efforts to flip back the House next year.

Menendez will be vice chair for the northeast, meaning that he may be closely involved in two New Jersey races: Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield)’s bid for a third term in the 7th district and Rep. Nellie Pou (D-North Haledon)’s re-election effort in the 9th district, both districts that narrowly voted for Donald Trump last year. (Other districts could theoretically become competitive as well, depending on the political environment in 2026.)

“Rob Menendez is a proven, effective, and enthusiastic communicator whose role as one of the DCCC’s Regional Vice Chairs will play a critical part in the team effort to retake the House Majority,” DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene said in a statement. “Rob’s tireless advocacy for working families is the exact kind of leadership we need to be successful in the midterms.”

Menendez’s own seat, covering a series of majority-Hispanic towns in urban North Jersey, is not competitive, but the congressman is not a stranger to tough races. Last year, amid the political fallout of his father’s indictment and eventual conviction on corruption charges, he received a serious challenge from Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla in the 8th district Democratic primary; with the support of House Democratic leadership and some financial assistance from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Menendez prevailed 52% to 37%.

The DCCC post is one of several new roles Menendez is taking on this year; he’s also the vice chair of policy for the Hispanic Caucus and a new member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, one of the House’s most powerful panels.

“In the past two months, voters across the country have seen Republicans’ playbook in action as they sow disorder, challenge the frameworks of our democracy, and fundamentally disregard the priorities of their constituents,” Menendez said of his DCCC appointment. “We have heard the demand for a different direction for our country and House Democrats are prepared to deliver for the American people – always putting people over politics.”
