Progressive pollster finds that most American voters want Menendez to resign

A national poll conducted by the progressive pollster Data for Progress finds that the vast majority of American voters across party lines want indicted U.S. Senator Bob Menendez to resign from the Senate.

According to the poll, which was released yesterday, 80% of voters think Menendez should step down, versus just 8% who think he should stay. At least 75% of respondents across all party affiliations, races, genders, and age groups said Menendez should resign.

Before asking about Menendez’s potential resignation – something that the senator has insisted he will not do – Data for Progress informed respondents about the basics of the charges, which allege that Menendez accepted bribes from three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for influence and sensitive information.

But the pollster first asked whether respondents had heard about the charges on their own, and a substantial number of them had. 23% said they’d heard “a lot” about the charges and 33% said they’d heard “a little,” while 44% said they hadn’t heard anything about them.

The poll is the second one in recent days to paint Menendez in dire shape. A Public Policy Polling poll conducted on behalf of VoteVets, which is supporting Menendez’s primary opponent Rep. Andy Kim (D-Mooretown), found that only 8% of New Jerseyans have a favorable view of Menendez, versus 74% who view him unfavorably.

The Data for Progress poll was conducted from September 27-28 with a sample size of 1,255 likely voters and a margin of error of +/-3%.
