Passaic County Democrats today voted to endorse Tammy Murphy for U.S. Senate, formally giving the First Lady her first organization line.
Endorsements in Passaic are made by party screening committees, with mostly municipal chairs casting votes. Democratic County Chairman John Currie was an early Murphy supporter, and there was no drama in today’s vote.
Passaic County has 130,614 registered Democrats, which ranks 9th in the state.
Murphy is battling Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) in the Democratic Senate primary. Former Newark school board member Lawrence Hamm and activist Patricia Campos-Medina are also in the race.
Currie has been the county chairman since 1990. He is a former New Jersey Democratic State Chairman; Murphy endorsed Currie during a fight with LeRoy Jones in 2019.
In 2000, Currie endorsed former Gov. Jim Florio for U.S. Senate and gave him the line in Passaic County. But the line didn’t hold, and Jon Corzine carried Passaic by 1,472 votes, 55%-45%.
