New Sherrill ad slams DeGroot on abortion position

Livingston nurse tells story of watching a teenager die after a pre-Roe v. Wade abortion

A nurse who watched a 17-year-old woman die in her arms as a result of an illegal abortion before Roe v. Wade appears in a new digital ad for Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) attacking Republican Paul DeGroot’s support for allowing states to prohibit abortions without exceptions.

The ad features a Livingston woman, Maxine Fine, speaking directly to camera telling her story.  It’s the first negative ad in Sherrill’s bid for a third term in New Jersey’s 11th district.  Her campaign says today’s ad is part of a six-figure digital buy.

Script: “In 1972, a year before Roe v. Wade was decided, a young woman died in my arms.  She had had an illegal abortion. She was 17 years old.   So, when I found out that Paul DeGroot supports states being able to ban abortion without exception, I was terrified.  Women will die because of the policy that Paul DeGroot supports.  We can’t let him take us back.”

Sherrill’s campaign sources a column from a Bergen Record reporter, who says DeGroot, a former assistant Passaic County Prosecutor, declined to condemn or endorse the U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade but did say that “abortion laws should be left up  to the states.”

“Paul DeGroot has no respect for a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions, including on abortion. Just this week we saw, once again, what happens when Roe protections are gone as West Virginia passed a severe, sweeping abortion ban,” said Jackie Burns, Sherrill’s campaign manager.  “Women across the country like Maxine know the dangers of a world without Roe, and Paul DeGroot’s policies will take us back to that.”
