Nadine Menendez transferred to a federal prison in Connecticut

Nadine Menendez, the wife of former U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez and his one-time co-defendant in a sweeping federal bribery case, was transferred from Florida to a federal prison in Connecticut on August 20, according to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokesman.

Menendez is now incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, a low-security facility approximately 65 miles from her home in Englewood Cliffs and closer to her doctors in New York.

The transfer came after Menendez began serving a 54-month sentence at a minimum-security federal prison camp in Tallahassee on July 10.

A federal jury convicted Menendez in April 2025 on bribery, obstruction of justice and related corruption charges.  Prosecutors presented evidence that she and her husband accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, gold bars, a Mercedes-Benz convertible and other bribes in exchange for official acts by the senator.

Menendez was initially charged alongside her husband, then the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. U.S. District Court Judge Sidney Stein later severed her case after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Following her conviction, Stein sentenced Menendez to 54 months in prison and delayed her surrender date by nearly 11 months to allow her to undergo cancer treatment and recover.  Stein rejected a last-minute request to postpone the sentence further, so Menendez could undergo additional reconstructive surgery.

Danbury has housed several nationally known inmates.  The facility previously housed Martha Stewart and Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice.

Bob Menendez began serving his 11-year federal prison sentence on June 17 after being convicted in the same corruption case.

The former senator had initially been assigned to FCI Schuylkill, a medium-security federal prison with an adjacent minimum-security satellite camp in Minersville, Pennsylvania.   On July 1, he was moved to a minimum-security federal prison in Allenwood, Pennsylvania.

His new prison is about 75 miles north of Harrisburg and a little under three hours from his New Jersey home in Englewood Cliffs.   Schuylkill was about thirty minutes closer.
