Assembly Judiciary Chairman Raj Mukherji (D-Jersey City), a rising star in Hudson County politics, said today that he won’t run the congressional seat of retiring Rep. Albio Sires (D-West New York), and that he’ll instead support the campaign of Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Commissioner Robert J. Menendez.
“I think Rob Menendez, who’s been a friend of mine since we were teenagers … has the perfect temperament, compassion, and intellect for that job,” Mukherji said. “If he should be interested in serving, I would wholeheartedly endorse him for that seat.”
The New Jersey Globe reported last night that Sires, a former Assembly Speaker, won’t seek another term in 2022, though a formal announcement is forthcoming.
Menendez, the son of U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, quickly became the frontrunner for the seat despite not yet announcing a campaign, and has already drawn a number of prominent endorsements besides Mukherji’s.
Mukherji’s running mate, State Sen. Brian P. Stack (D-Union City), also endorsed Menendez.
