The Morris County Jewish Democratic Caucus has declined to endorse Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-Glen Ridge) for re-election in New Jersey’s 11th district.
An email sent this evening endorsed U.S. Senator Cory Booker, Rebecca Bennett for Congress in the 7th district, and Chris Russo for County Commissioner, but skipped Mejia and made no recommendations in the 11th.
“We’ve gotten to learn about the issues, hear from the candidates, and engage with our neighbors. Now, it’s time to do our duty. ‘Justice, justice you shall pursue,’ the Torah commands,” said the three leaders of the Jewish Caucus, Jason Navarino, Debbie Dolce, and Rockaway Councilman Jonathan Sackett. “In a democracy, we pursue justice by voting for the candidates that will defend our people, support our values, and make the world — including our small corner of it — a better place.”
The Jewish Caucus is an arm of the Morris County Democratic organization.
Mejia’s stances on Israel and Gaza have complicated her relationship with Jewish voters. Her Republican opponent, Randolph Councilman Joe Hathaway, has sought to capitalize on her positions, including her characterization of Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide. Mejia has defended her criticism of the Israeli government while condemning anti-Semitism and affirming Jewish self-determination.
In a debate this week, Hathaway criticized Mejia for voting against legislation sponsored by Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly) aimed at addressing harassment of Jewish students on college campuses, saying that Mejia “put our students at risk”
The Jewish Caucus also plugged “some wonderful Jewish Democrats running for local office in Morris County:” Ben Weisman in Boonton, Shari Seffer in Montville, Sam Rothman in Morris Township, and Jess Price in Mount Arlington.
“Behatzlakha to our candidates,” the three caucus leaders said on behalf of their group. “See you at the polls.”
