The Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters have endorsed Robert J. Menendez for the Democratic nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s 8th district.

The Carpenters are one of the state’ s most politically active building trades unions, a well as one of the largest – about 13,000 members in New Jersey — and has a healthy campaign warchest.

“Hard working union families are witnessing a moment in history where more and more union supporting leaders are taken steps to help defend workers’ right, grow opportunity for workers, and protect union apprenticeship,”  Executive Secretary-Treasurer said William Sproule. “As the funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill is beginning to be allocated, we need to support candidates like Rob Menendez.  We trust in his ability to support local projects and represent New Jersey union families.”

Menendez, a commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the son of Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez, quickly emerged as the front-runner for the seat after nine-term Rep. Albio Sires (D-West New York) announced late last year that he would not seek re-election.

He said that the Carpenters union “represent the hard-working families that I’m fighting for, the families I want to strengthen.

“Organized labor literally built our country, and I want to go to Congress to make sure that unions remain a strong part of helping create a stronger middle class,” said Menendez.

Menendez has secured organization lines in Hudson and Union counties.  He faces David Ocampo and Brian Varela in the Democratic primary.
