Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has endorsed Robert J. Menendez for the Democratic nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s 8th district, which includes parts of the North and East Wards of the state’s largest city.

“Newark is a city of working families, and Rob has made strengthening families the core of his campaign,” Baraka said.  “With Rob as one of our two members of Congress, Newark will be well-represented in Washington.”

Menendez, a commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the son of U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez, is seeking the open seat of Rep. Albio Sires, who is not seeking re-election after nearly 16 years in the House.

“Rob will ensure that Newark benefits from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and he will support Democratic efforts to expand child care, invest in affordable housing, and other legislation that is critical to our city’s success,” stated Baraka.  “I look forward to working with Rob on ensuring that Newark’s renaissance continues for years to come.”

In turn, Menendez called the recently re-elected Baraka “a transformative leader for the City of Newark.”

“Our campaign is one that centers on the needs of families in our district,’ he said. “I will always pursue an agenda that provides real and tangible results for the residents of our district, including those in Newark.”

Menendez has the organization line in Essex County, along with Hudson and Union.
