Democratic congressional candidate Rob Menendez said he would support a move by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Brian P. Stack to protect Caven Point from commercial development and not leave it in the hand of the state Department of Environmental Protection, which runs Liberty State Park.
“Caven Point must be entirely off limits and preserved in its current and natural state,” said Menendez. “Losing Caven Point would be an irreversible loss. And that is something I will always stand against.
Stack, who sponsored a bill to permit the development of a golf course at the park, announced on Tuesday that he will introduce legislation to guarantee the protection of Caven Point as a natural habitat.
“Our family lives just blocks from Liberty State Park, an urban jewel that for many of our neighbors is our common backyard, and where my wife and I take our daughter most weekends,” Menendez said. “I look forward to the park reaching its full potential.
Menendez, who is the likely successor to Rep. Albio Sires (D-West New York) after winning the June 7 Democratic primary with 83%, said he was “glad to see that the contamination in the park is finally going to be remediated and that recreation and community-centered improvements might soon be added.”
