Rep.-elect LaMonica McIver (D-Newark) could be sworn in as the new congresswoman from New Jersey’s 10th district as early as Monday, the New Jersey Globe has learned.
In a letter to Kevin F. McCumber, the acting clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives, state election officials confirmed that McIver received 81% of the total votes cast in yesterday’s special election.
“It would appear from these unofficial election results, of the ballots counted so far, that LaMonica McIver has received the highest number of votes for the office of Representative in Congress from the tenth congressional district,” said Donna Barber, the acting director of the Division of Elections.
Barber said that there has been “no contest to this election.”
The Republican nominee, Carmen Bucco, told the New Jersey Globe today that while he looks forward to a rematch with McIver on November 5, he has no objection to McIver being sworn in before the Board of State Canvassers meets to certify the election.
“Absolutely she should,” Bucco said. “To me, it’s all about doing the right thing.”
The 10th district has been without representation in the House since Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark) died on April 24.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has worked with Speaker Mike Johnson to ensure that McIver take office as quickly as possible, the New Jersey Globe has learned.
McIver will serve the remainder of Payne’s current term, which expires on January 3, 2025.
