House Democratic leadership team endorses Rob Menendez

Jeffries signals Democratic unity behind Menendez ahead of competitive primary

The three top Democrats in the U.S. House – Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York), Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Massachusetts), and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-California) – are endorsing Rep. Rob Menendez (D-Jersey City), a freshman member of their caucus who faces a serious primary threat this year.

“In the U.S. House of Representatives, Rob is a champion for our values and fights tirelessly to make the American Dream a possibility for all,” Jeffries, Clark, and Aguilar said in a joint statement. “Rob’s focus and effectiveness have made him an invaluable member of the Democratic Caucus, having already served in several leadership positions, both elected and appointed by his peers. He is a fierce advocate for transportation and affordability, stands with us against MAGA extremism, and continues to deliver for his community and our nation.”

Their support is not hugely surprising; top House Democrats have had a consistent policy of backing incumbents in primaries regardless of the ideology of the incumbent or their challenger. Menendez is also a low-ranking member of Democratic House leadership himself, serving as the freshman representative on the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee last year and as a regional whip for Mid-Atlantic states.

Still, the endorsement is still an important show of party unity for Menendez, who will go up against Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla in this year’s Democratic primary for the deep-blue 8th congressional district.

Menendez was first elected to the district, which covers a heavily urban and majority-Hispanic swath of North Jersey, in 2022. Previously an appointed commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Menendez had never run for public office before his 2022 campaign; his father, Senator Bob Menendez, had held the same congressional seat from 1993 until 2006.

But now, with the severe legal difficulties facing Senator Menendez, Congressman Menendez could be in political danger. Although he has the near-unified support of local Democrats in Hudson County, internal polling paints a dicey picture for the congressman, and Bhalla’s campaign has already raised $1 million to take him on.

Menendez hasn’t released his end-of-year fundraising report yet, but whatever money he does raise will have to go towards his own renomination fight rather than towards vulnerable Democrats in competitive districts – likely another reason the Democratic leadership team would rather avoid primary challenges when possible.

“Rob has always put People Over Politics, and we look forward to helping him get re-elected so he can continue his work for New Jersey’s Eighth Congressional District,” Jeffries, Clark, and Aguilar said.
