Republican congressional candidate Claire Gustafson thinks that a call by Rep. Donald Norcross (D-Camden) to offer a federal gas tax holiday is just a gimmick.
“In theory a temporary suspension of federal gas taxes will provide some financial relief for hard-working New Jerseyans but I immediately become suspicious any time Donald Norcross proposes anything that offers tax breaks,” said Claire Gustafson, a former Collinswood school board member challenging the incumbent in New Jersey’s 1st district.
Instead, Gustafson wants Norcross and Democrats to support a proposal to State Sen. Ed Durr (R-Swedesboro) to provide a $500 rebate check to New Jerseyans to provide relief from rapidly increasing gas prices.
“As hardworking New Jerseyans are faced with high gas prices, soaring grocery prices and record inflation it is time for Norcross to offer real solutions.” Gustafson said, “Don’t stop at pushing for a temporary suspension of gas taxes. If he’s serious about folks saving money on gas Norcross should join me in calling on the Governor and Democrats in the state legislature to support (Durr’s proposal).”
President Joe Biden has floated a federal gas tax holiday but that hasn’t generated much support among House Democrats.
