While two candidates continue to fight over nominating petitions, Darryl Godfrey has raised over $100,000 after less than two weeks in the race for the Democratic nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s 10th district.
Godfrey, the chief operating officer of the New Jersey Redevelopment Authority, is one of eleven Democrats running in a July 16 special Democratic primary for the unexpired term of Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark), who died on April 24 at age 65.
“The outpouring of support we’re seeing in just the early days of this campaign is truly inspiring, and it shows the strong appetite that exists for experienced candidates with a record of delivering progress for urban communities,” Godfrey said. “I personally thank each and every person who has made the decision to invest early in this campaign, as well as our network of close friends and family who have made this success possible.”
Part of Godfrey’s haul is a $50,000 personal contribution to start off his campaign.
“I can’t wait to start meeting with friends and neighbors in the 10th district and sharing my vision for what the federal government can do to help communities in Essex, Union and Hudson counties,” Godfrey said.
Also seeking the Democratic nomination are Newark Council President LaMonica McIver, former East Orange Councilwoman and Andy Kim campaign staffer Brittany Claybrooks, Hudson County Commissioner Jerry Walker, Linden Mayor Derek Armstead, former Payne staffer Shana Melius, law professor and election law expert Eugene Mazo, John Flora, Alberta Gordon, Sheila Montague, and Debra Salters.
The winner of July special primary will compete in a September 18 special election to fill Payne’s unexpired term.
