The national good government group End Citizens United (ECU) announced this morning that it is endorsing Sue Altman, the presumptive Democratic nominee for New Jersey’s competitive 7th congressional district against Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield).

“Sue Altman is a fierce pro-democracy advocate, who has a record of fighting to root out Big Money’s corrupting influence on our government,” ECU President Tiffany Muller said in a statement. “Sue is committed to passing crucial reforms to ensure every American has a voice in their elections – not just the wealthy elite. She is refusing to take a penny of corporate PAC money to show voters that she’s only beholden to them – unlike Congressman Kean who’s been a corporate cash cow throughout his career.”

Altman, who has raised nearly $800,000 for her campaign so far without any corporate PAC money, currently has no Democratic primary opponents for the 7th district after several other challengers dropped out of the race.

Also running with ECU’s endorsement this year is Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown), who is one of several Democratic candidates aiming to succeed indicted Senator Bob Menendez. ECU is specifically devoted to overturning the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which deregulated independent expenditure groups, but generally supports candidates it believes to be strong on campaign finance and voting rights issues.

Another outside group, Elect Democratic Women, endorsed Altman as well this week.

“With her experience as a teacher and high school basketball coach, Sue Altman knows the value of public education and fair wages,” said Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Florida), the chair of Elect Democratic Women. “Sue has the tenacity it takes to get things done in Congress and we are confident she will continue to fight for women’s reproductive freedom and for policies that uplift women and families.”
