Emily’s List, which supports pro-choice women running for office by helping them to raise money early, today endorsed Carol Murphy for Congress in New Jersey’s 3rd district.
Murphy, the majority whip of the New Jersey State Assembly, is seeking the Democratic nomination to replace Rep. Andy Kim, who is giving up his seat after three terms to run for the U.S. Senate.
The endorsement came as Monmouth County Democrats were voting to award the organization line for Congress at their convention this morning.
“Assemblywoman Carol Murphy has spent her career fighting for the future of New Jersey in and out of office, and EMILYs List is proud to endorse her to do the same in the U.S. House. Murphy has led the way in protecting some of our most fundamental rights in the state legislature,” said Jessica Mackler, the interim president of the organization. “Her experience and dedication will make her an extraordinary representative for the 3rd congressional district, and we look forward to helping this pro-choice champion cross the finish line in November.”
Murphy faces Assemblyman Herb Conaway, civil rights lawyer Joe Cohn, and seafood company owner Sarah Schoengood in the Democratic primary.
Emily’s List – “Early money is like yeast, it makes the dough rise” – was formed in 1985 and has raised over $850 million for Democratic women candidates.
