Voters in New Jersey’s 10th district cast a total of 10,521 advance votes for Tuesday’s special primary election to fill the unexpired term of the late Rep. Donald Payne, Jr. (D-Newark), according to an analysis from Ryan Dubicki, an Associated Press election researcher.

So far, just 2% of registered voters have cast their votes in an election that might have a new Member of Congress in place in time to finish the last two months of Payne’s term.

As of this morning, Democrats cast 9,675 votes, a 4% pre-Election Day turnout.  That included 8,132 vote-by-mail ballots and 1,543 in-person early votes cast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Democrats have returned roughly 25% of the VBMs sent out by county clerks in Essex, Hudson, and Union.

The advance votes represent 32% of the total votes Payne received posthumously in the June 4 primary election.

Eleven Democrats are vying for the chance to finish Payne’s current term.

Carmen Bucco is unopposed in the special Republican primary.  So far, 839 votes have been cast: 649 by mail-in ballot and 190 early votes.
