DeGroot TV ad hits back on Sherrill’s attacks

Spot focuses heavily on Sherrill’s stock trades, calling congresswoman a ‘swamp creature’

After months of getting pummeled on the airwaves by Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair), former Assistant Passaic County Prosecutor Paul DeGroot is up with a response spot on cable TV that hits Sherrill back on the issue of stock trading.

Script: (Narrator): “Seen these ads from Mikie Sherrill? She’s lying. A swamp creature covering her illegal acts, Mikie Sherrill was caught breaking federal law – trading millions in stocks, potentially using insider knowledge in companies her committees oversaw. While Sherrill was working to enrich herself off taxpayers, Paul DeGroot was fighting corruption. 25-year prosecutor. Pro-choice advocate for women. Paul DeGroot: the outsider who will enrich New Jersey, not himself.”

As Business Insider reported in late 2021, Sherrill was late to report a stock sale made by her husband, a violation of the federal STOCK Act. The congresswoman, who began selling off her individual stocks when she became a member of Congress, said that she addressed the late filing as soon as it was discovered.

DeGroot isn’t the only Republican candidate in New Jersey to focus on stocks. In the highly competitive 7th district, former Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield) has hit Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) repeatedly over his late stock disclosures, which were far more dramatic than Sherrill’s; Malinowski is the subject of a still-unresolved House Ethics Committee inquiry.

Both Malinowski and Sherrill have since pushed for a ban on stock trading by members of Congress.

In her own TV ads, Sherrill has focused on the issue of abortion, saying that DeGroot would pose a threat to abortion access if he were elected. DeGroot has insisted that he’s a pro-choice Repulican, though he’s also said that the Supreme Court was right to overturn Roe v. Wade and that the issue is best left up to individual states.

Sherrill has a colossal lead when it comes to resources, spending $5.5 million so far this election cycle to DeGroot’s $357,000. The 11th congressional district also became significantly more Democratic-leaning on the state’s new congressional map, making Sherrill the favorite for re-election.
