The National Republican Congressional Committee is pushing New Jersey’s Democratic House members on a sexual assault allegation leveled at former Vice President Joe Biden.
Biden, the Democratic party’s presumptive presidential nominee, has been accused of sexually assaulting Tara Reade, then a Senate aide to Biden, in 1993.
The GOP organization has called on Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff), Andy Kim (D-Marlton), Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) and Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) to call for Biden’s Senate records to be unsealed.
Following weeks of silence on the allegation, Biden on Friday denied the charges and asked for Senate records to be searched for a complaint Reade says she filed at the time.
Of the four Democratic incumbents, two, Sherrill and Malinowksi, have made statements in support of women who accused U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault.
“It’s important to have a system in which survivors of sexual assault and violence can be heard. It’s even more important to hear those voices when deciding the leadership in our highest offices,” Sherrill said on Twitter in September 2018.
It’s not clear how much of an impact, if any, Reade’s allegation will have on down-ballot races in New Jersey.
