The Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters has endorsed Assembly Majority Whip Carol Murphy (D-Mount Laurel) for the Democratic nomination for Congress in New Jersey’s 3rd district.

The announcement comes one day before Murphy and Assemblyman Herbert Conaway, Jr. (D-Delran) face off for the backing of Monmouth County Democrats at their convention to award the organization line.

With nearly 13,000 New Jersey members, the Carpenters are one of the state’s most politically potent labor unions, and their support typically includes boots on the ground and a significant financial investment.

“Over the years, Assemblywoman Carol Murphy has proven she is a supporter of labor issues in New Jersey including expanding our energy production through offshore wind, defending union apprenticeships, and advocating for more women in the construction industry,” the Carpenters executive secretary-treasurer, William Sproule.  “Union Carpenters know that Carol will continue her support of the union way of life as their representative in Washington.”

The House seat has been held for more than five years by Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown), who is instead seeking a U.S. Senate seat.  Two other candidates, civil rights attorney Joe Cohn and seafood company owner Sarah Schoengood, are not on the Monmouth convention ballot.

“I have admired and supported the Carpenters’ efforts to expand opportunities for women in the labor movement through robust training initiatives, fostering an environment where all individuals can thrive and contribute their skills to our communities,” Murphy said.  “Working together in Washington, we will continue to advance policies that uphold the principles of fairness, equality, and opportunity for all workers. I proudly stand beside the men and women of organized labor, and I am humbled to receive their support in this election.”
