Malinowski, Kim, Gottheimer & Sherrill get endorsements from gun safety group

The Brady PAC, one of the nation’s largest gun safety advocacy groups, has endorsed nine congressional candidates in New Jersey, including Reps. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) and Andy Kim (D-Moorestown).

The group has endorsed only Democratic incumbents – Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-Wyckoff), Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair), Bill Pascrell (D-Paterson), Donald Payne (D-Newark), and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing) – for re-election this fall.

Malinowski faces Senate Minority Leader Thomas Kean, Jr. (R-Westfield) in New Jersey’s 7th district.  When Malinowski ran in 2018, several gun safety groups, including Giffords, endorsed the Republican incumbent, Leonard Lance (R-Clinton Township).

Many of the endorsements have been issued months ago.

Kim, who is being challenged by Republican businessman Bob Healey in the 3rd district, was endorsed by Brady in March.  Kim announced the endorsement today.

“We know that gun violence is on everyone’s minds.  We see it every day on the news, and we see the long-term effects of gun violence in communities across the country,” Kim said.  “Kids are growing up doing drills and too many children are living through the trauma of witnessing some of the most horrific violence first hand.

A Republican congressman endorsed by the Brady PAC in 2018 and 2020, Christopher Smith (R-Manchester), did not get the endorsement this year.  Instead, the group isn’t taking sides in the 4th district where a Democratic challenger has been unable to gain any traction at all against the 21-term incumbent.

On Thursday, the Brady PAC also added Reps. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-Long Branch) and Donald Norcross (D-Camden) to their list of endorsements.

“Reps. Frank Pallone and Donald Norcross are two of the strongest gun violence prevention leaders in Congress,” said Ashley Lantz, the Brady PAC interim executive director. “Their commitment to the issue of gun safety has been unwavering.”

There is also no Brady PAC endorsement in the 2nd district, where Republican Jeff Van Drew (R-Dennis) is seeking his third term.

This story was updated at 7:17 PM  to include endorsements of Pallone and Norcross.
