Assemblywoman-elect Andrea Katz (D-Chesterfield), who scored an upset victory over a freshman Republican assemblyman in a South Jersey district, has endorsed Assembly Majority Whip Carol Murphy (D-Mount Laurel) for Congress in New Jersey’s 3rd district.

“Now more than ever, as the United States Supreme Court and a dysfunctional Congress wage war on women, trying to create a world where my daughters will have fewer rights than I had, it is essential that we send to Washington someone with the tenacity and track record to get things done,” Katz said.  “In the fight for reproductive freedom and so many issues impacting women, I trust Carol Murphy to be on our side and fight like hell to protect us.”

Murphy is seeking the Democratic nomination for the seat Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) is giving up run for U.S. Senate.  So far, she faces Assemblyman Herb Conaway, Jr. (D-Delran), who announced his congressional bid last week.

Katz credited Murphy for her 252-vote win over Assemblyman Brandon Umba (R-Medford) last month.  That race had been initially called for Uma, but counts of vote-by-mail and provisional ballots reversed that.

“Having just battled my way to win a seat Democrats haven’t held in five decades; Carol Murphy was literally by my side every step of the way.  She has always been a friend and was there for me in many ways when many did not believe we could make history,” stated Katz.  “I’m proud to join Carol in making history again as she would be the first-ever congresswoman in the history of South Jersey and only the eighth woman to ever serve in Congress from New Jersey.”

Conaway, an assemblyman for the last 26 years, was endorsed this week by Burlington County Democratic Chairman Joe Andl, and today by five countywide elected officials, four mayors and our Democratic municipal chairs.

Conaway, Murphy and Katz each endorsed Steve Sweeney, the former Senate President, for governor in 2025.

“There is a sad reality: I was looking forward to years of service together in New Jersey’s General Assembly,” said Katz.  “However, we need Congresswoman Carol Murphy fighting for us at the United States Capitol.  I cannot wait to start knocking on doors with my friend.”
