Sue Altman has won the Hunterdon County Democratic endorsement for the 7th congressional district, her first official county line in her campaign against Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield).
Altman, a native of Hunterdon County who lives in Lambertville, was uncontested in today’s contest. Earlier in the campaign, she faced a variety of primary opponents – Roselle Park Mayor Joe Signorello III, Summit Councilman Greg Vartan, and former U.S. State Department official Jason Blazakis – but they all dropped out of the race before any convention votes were cast.
“Hunterdon is my home county, and this is democracy in action,” Altman said. “I’m very proud and humbled to have this privilege to run and represent this place that I love more than any place in the world. If I get to Congress, I will fight for the people of Hunterdon County and all across the district with every breath I have.”
Prior to launching her campaign for Congress, Altman was a progressive activist and the director of the New Jersey Working Families Party. Her race against Kean is expected to be the most competitive congressional election in New Jersey this year.
Also winning today’s Hunterdon convention uncontested was President Joe Biden; Biden’s main primary opponent, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minnesota), did not file to compete at the convention, just as he skipped the Burlington and Monmouth conventions before this one.
For two county commissioner seats, Hunterdon Democrats chose former Clinton Township Council candidate Robert Parkanyi and Franklin Township Democratic municipal chair Dan Connor, who was also the party’s 2023 nominee for commissioner. Incumbent Commissioners Susan Soloway (R-Franklin) and Jeff Kuhl (R-Raritan) are heavily favored in November, though Democrats have substantially narrowed the gap in Hunterdon County in recent years.
