Non-profit activist Alex Valdez won the Democratic nomination for the 9th district Hudson County commissioner seat, the New Jersey Globe projects.
The candidates were looking to replace Albert Cifelli, who is not seeking re-election. Valdez faced Mina Ekladious, the president of the Kearny PBA, and Harrison Councilman Larry Bennett for the nomination.
The 9th district of Hudson County includes East Newark, Harrison, Kearny, Secaucus, and parts of Jersey City.
The race was the only contested primary for the Hudson County Board of Commissioners, as machine and progressive leaders agreed to a unity slate earlier this year. Valdez was a member of this unity slate
Cifelli was first elected in 1995 after serving eleven years as a Harrison councilman in a tenure that overlapped with the legendary Mayor Frank E. Rodgers. Rodgers, a former state senator and county clerk, was mayor for 48 years.
Incumbent Register Jeffrey Dublin won renomination against Melissa Alexander.
