Sabo, Rush to challenge Republicans in LD-1

The South Jersey Democrats face a tough general election

Democrats nominated Carol Sabo and Carolyn Rush to challenge an incumbent Republican duo in South Jersey’s 1st legislative district, the New Jersey Globe projects.

West Cape May Mayor Carol Sabo ran on the party slate; engineer Carolyn Rush and Princeton student Brandon Saffold, who both ran for the 2nd congressional district last year, ran on Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop’s slate of Assembly candidates.

Assemblymen Erik Simonsen (R-Lower) and Antwan McClellan (R-Ocean City), who first flipped their deep South Jersey seats in 2019, are likely set for re-election in a district that’s become staunchly Republican.

Two of the three Democratic candidates were aligned with Fulop, guaranteeing him at least one ally on the November ballot.

The 1st legislative district includes Cape May County and parts of Atlantic and Cumberland counties.
