Peapack & Gladstone Borough Council President John Sweeney announced a run for Somerset County surrogate this past weekend.
Sweeney, who is seeking the Republican nomination, first won election to the council in 2001 and is now serving his seventh term, according to a press release. His council colleagues have elected him council president for the last three years.
Sweeney is seeking the endorsement of the Somerset County Republican Organization at its convention early next month.
“My goal is to bring Republican innovation back to the office of the surrogate. As a trust and estate attorney since 1993, I have worked with Surrogates from Cape May to Warren on matters ranging from guardianships to probate, from trust accountings to the Slayer Statute,” Sweeney said in a release. “My professional experience and my experience as an elected official for almost 20 years not only qualifies me to do the job but substantially supports the prospects of my election.”
Peapack & Gladstone Mayor Mark Corigliano endorsed Sweeney for the job.
“For as long as I can remember, the borough has always been able to count on John Sweeney. John’s dedication and unwavering commitment to serve the residents of the borough is second to none. He gives unselfishly of his time and talent,” Corigliano said in a release. “Somerset County can count on John Sweeney to be a dedicated Surrogate, and to modernize the office.”
Bernice “Tina” Jalloh, the Democratic surrogate of Somerset County, filed to run for re-election in 2023. Jalloh unseated former Surrogate Frank Bruno, a Republican, in 2020.
Somerset County has elected a Republican to a countywide office since 2017.
