Five Democratic National Committee members from New Jersey were re-elected tonight without opposition, giving Modia Butler, John Graham, Marcia Marley, Laura Matos, and Bernadette McPherson new four-year terms.
Those five, along with Democratic State Chairman LeRoy Jones, Jr. and Vice Chair Peg Schaffer, will represent New Jersey when the 448-member committee meets on February 1 to elect a new Democratic National Chair.
The incumbent, Jaime Harrison, announced last month that he would not seek re-election to another term.
So far, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, Wisconsin Democratic State Chairman Ben Wikler, Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Chairman Ken Martin, New York State Sen. James Skoufis, and two others are in the race.
One potential candidate has New Jersey ties: Michigan Senate Majority Whip Mallory McMorrow, who grew up in Readington.
The last competitive election for DNC chairman was in 2017, after Hillary Clinton lost the presidential race; former U.S. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez defeated Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota) by 35 votes, 235-200. Other candidates, including Pete Buttigieg, Howard Dean, and Harrison, dropped out.
