A majority of local Democrats in Mount Laurel, the second-largest municipality in Burlington County, have endorsed its favorite daughter, Assembly Majority Whip Carol Murphy (D-Mount Laurel), for Congress in New Jersey’s 3rd district.
Mayor Stephen Steglik, Deputy Mayor and incoming Mayor Fozia Janjua, former Mayor Kareem Pritchett, and incoming Deputy Mayor Nikitas Moustakas, are backing Murphy, a four-term lawmaker, for the seat Rep. Andy Kim (D-Moorestown) is vacating to run for the U.S. Senate.
Mount Laurel Democratic Municipal Chairman Michael Muller, who is Murphy’s husband, is also among the Murphy for Congress endorsers.
“This community has no better leader, champion, or friend than Carol Murphy. That is why she is our choice to represent us in Congress. She will be a voice for our community and all of South Jersey,” the group of Democrats said in a statement. “Carol has worked to close the pay gap for women, expanded access to quality health care, fought for gender-based violence prevention, and authorized a program to cut senior citizens’ property taxes in half. Our issues are Carol’s issues because she’s one of us.”
Mount Laurel was a Republican stronghold until Democrats flipped two council seats in 2018 and three more in 2020.
Murphy faces her running mate, Assemblyman Herbert Conaway, Jr. (D-Delanco) in the Democratic primary.
“In her time in the State Assembly, Carol has proven herself a devoted advocate for Mount Laurel residents,” the Mount Laurel Democrats stated. “Whether it has been organizing neighborhood town hall meetings to address community concerns directly, securing vital funding for our parks and infrastructure, or providing invaluable support during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic, Carol Murphy has consistently demonstrated her unwavering commitment to our community.”
