Monmouth County Democrats have decided to hold county committee election in the June Democratic primary, bucking a statewide trend of postponing those contests until 2021.
Democrats cited issues with their by-laws, which would have required a vote of the county committee to extend their own terms until next year.
Monmouth cancelled their in-person Democratic county convention in response to state guidelines limited large gatherings to combat the spread of COVID-19. Instead, they are holding a vote-by-mail convention. Results are expected early next week.
There are only two contests: the race for president between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, and the Democratic primary for Congress in the 4th district to pick an opponent for 20-term Republican Rep. Christopher Smith (R-Hamilton).
In the 6th district, Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-Long Branch) is unopposed at the convention after his primary opponent, progressive Russ Cirincione, declined to seek the Monmouth Democratic organization line.
