The Laborers International Union of North America has endorsed Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) for the Democratic nomination for governor, giving her the support of one of New Jersey’s most politically powerful labor unions that will come with money and boots on the ground.
The endorsement was expected: LIUNA Vice President and Eastern Regional Manager Mike Hellstrom encouraged Sherrill to run for governor in an Op-Ed published by the New Jersey Globe, and later introduced her to national labor leaders at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
“In August, when we first called on Mikie to run for governor, we cited her experience, her solutions-driven approach to problem-solving, and her deep understanding of the issues affecting LIUNA members and their families as qualities that would make her an excellent governor,” stated Hellstrom. “We’re thrilled she heeded our call to enter the race and are proud to recommit our support and the full power of LIUNA to Mikie Sherrill and her campaign.”
Support from building trades unions has already split. Former Senate President Steve Sweeney, an ironworkers union leader, shares support with Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly) and Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop.
Sherrill entered the race on Monday. She’s already qualified for state matching funds after raising $600,00 in her first 24 hours as a gubernatorial candidate and formally received endorsements from the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association and Emily’s List.
