A Readington Township woman has joined the race for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Michigan, where an incumbent from her own party is not seeking re-election in a state that has become increasingly purple.
Mallory McMorrow, a 38-year-old state senator with a national reputation after a speech she delivered on abortion rights went viral, graduated from Hunterdon Central Regional High School, where she played lacrosse.
If McMorrow wins, she will become the fourth U.S. Senator to grow up in New Jersey, along with Cory Booker (Harrington Park), Andy Kim (Cherry Hill), and Mark Kelly (West Orange).
She is expected to face a competitive Democratic primary in the race for Gary Peters’ seat.
Donald Trump won Michigan in 2016 and 2024. The state has not elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1994, but had a two-term GOP governor until 2018; Democrats control the State Senate, and Republicans have the State House of Representatives.
