Rep. Rob Menendez (D-Jersey City) has been endorsed by the Communications Workers of America in his bid for a second term as the congressman from New Jersey’s 8th district.

“Menendez is a staunch advocate for New Jersey’s working families and has devoted his life to making this state even stronger,” said Dennis Trainor, the CWA District 1 president.  “He’s who we need in Washington helping make our voices heard.”

He faces a tough Democratic primary challenge from Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla, who began mounting a campaign for the nomination soon after Menendez’s father, U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, was indicted last fall on federal bribery and corruption charges.   Bhalla raised over $1.6 million as of the end of March, over $200,000 more than the incumbent.

Menendez has been sweeping union endorsements, gaining support from more than a dozen labor groups, including the Hudson County Central Labor Council, the Hudson County Building and Construction Trades Council, the New Jersey Education Association, and AFSCME.

“I am proud to serve CWA’s hard-working members,” Menendez said.  “We will always stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our unions in the fight for fair wages, stronger workplace protections, and improved safety standards”
