Bayonne mayoral candidates spar over data center vote

Controversy over data centers has struck Hudson County, where the Bayonne council passed a resolution opposing such centers within city borders. But a candidate for mayor says the vote won’t actually change the result of one project, criticizing a councilman and mayoral opponent in the process. 

The Bayonne Council last week unanimously approved a resolution expressing opposition to such projects, a move touted by Councilman and mayoral candidate Loyad Booker. The action is no surprise. Anger over the proliferation of data centers is reshaping New Jersey’s politics, inspiring public movements from New Brunswick to Vineland, and Bayonne is the latest center of controversy. 

“Our responsibility is to put people first and ensure Bayonne remains a safe, healthy place to live, work, and raise a family,” Booker said in a release. 

But former Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski, who is also running for mayor, criticized Booker, arguing that a December planning board vote could allow for a data center on New Hook Road regardless. 

“Bayonne residents are sick and tired of insider politicians like Loyad Booker selling us out and putting corporations, big developers and campaign donors ahead of our community’s best interests,” Ashe-Nadrowski said in a release. “We need to elect leaders who will answer only to the people of Bayonne. As Mayor I will demand open, honest and transparent government that is accountable to the residents.”

Both Booker and Ashe-Nadrowski are seeking the mayorship in next month’s non-partisan municipal election. Bayonne’s previous mayor, Jimmy Davis, resigned on Jan. 1 to become the Hudson County sheriff. The Bayonne City Council named Public Safety Director Robert Kubert as the interim mayor. He is not seeking a full term.
