Senate panel advances Kean bill increasing funding for Shore Protection Fund

The Senate Environment and Energy Committee advanced a bill doubling funding for the Shore Protection Fund Thursday.

“All of our shore communities and their local economies depend on us preserving our valuable coastline,” said Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean (R-Westfield), the bill’s sponsor. “By doubling the amount of money that goes to the ’Shore Protection Fund,’ we will ensure that homes, small businesses, beaches, and boardwalks are properly maintained and protected from environmental factors such as erosion and sea-level rise.”

The measure increases the $25 million appropriation the fund receives annually to $50 million.

The program, meant to offset costs faced by county and local governments related to weatherization and storm damage repairs, is funded through realty transfer fees.
